Second-hand fashion marketplace Vinted sells the most clothing in France in terms of sales volume. It outranks Amazon and local omnichannel clothing seller Kiabi. This indicates that recommerce is gaining market share in the country.

Recommerce, the online sale of second-hand goods, is gaining in popularity. Last year, the European recommerce market was worth 94 billion euros. It is expected to increase 14 percent by 2027.

Offline retailers also included

The French Fashion Institute (IFM) recently did a consumer survey and has now reported its findings. The survey included retailers that sell online as well as offline. In the first quarter of this year, Vinted is the biggest seller of clothing in France in terms of sales volume. Ecommerce giant Amazon and local seller Kiabi ranked second and third.

Second-hand sales account for 10.8% of all clothing sales volumes

According to the report, second-hand sales account for 10.9 percent of all sale volumes. Its market share is even higher among young consumers (aged between 18 and 34 years), with 16.3 percent.

Chinese sellers still behind in France

Surprisingly, Chinese ecommerce fashion giants Shein and Temu ranked further behind, in 5th and 24th place respectively. According to the IFM, Amazon, Shein and Temu accounted for almost a third of online clothing sales in the first quarter.

Online sales accounted for 29.4% of all clothing sales in France

However, when comparing it to overall sales volumes on clothing, both online and offline, the trio only has a share of 7 percent. Online sales accounted for 29.4 percent of all clothing sales in France.

36.4% of clothing sales were during promotions

It seems that French consumers primarily think about price when they are shopping clothing. The majority of the top 15 brands sell clothing for bargain prices. And 36.4 percent of clothing sales were made during sales and promotions.

This is also true for the recommerce market, where prices are lower than those of newer items. According to IMF, the most purchased products in terms of quantity are t-shirts, jeans, and shirts for men. They are sold for average prices of 14, 48 and 32 euros, respectively. Women mostly buy jeans, t-shirts and dresses, which are sold at average prices of 33, 14 and 38 euros.
