eBay reported a revenue of 1.4 billion euros (1.5 billion dollars) in the United Kingdom last year, over a hundred million dollars less than the year before. In Germany, revenue remained more or less stable. The company is performing better elsewhere.
This is according to a report eBay submitted to the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC). Total revenue grew by 1.7 percent last year to 9.8 billion euros (10.3 billion dollars), driven in part by strong results in its home market (up 3.3 percent) and in China (up 13.6 percent).
eBay in the United Kingdom
Results in Europe continue to lag, particularly in the United Kingdom and Germany, where fellow American marketplace Amazon reigns supreme. Revenue in the United Kingdom, which is still eBay’s most important international market, declined by 6.3 percent.
eBay lost 6.3% in UK revenue
Last summer, the online marketplace invested in customer loyalty among British shoppers by adjusting its cancellation policy.
eBay in Germany
In Germany, eBay’s results also lag behind overall growth, though it appears to have regained its growth trajectory; after two years of decline, eBay’s revenue there increased by 1 million dollars to 972 million dollars (928.9 million euros).
eBay’s German revenue grew by 1 million dollars
In 2024, eBay Germany implemented several policy changes: it announced a number of improvements for commercial sellers and introduced a Top-Service label, allowing them to stand out on the platform. The label is comparable to Amazon Prime, with the key difference that sellers do not need to sign up to be eligible and do not have to pay any (additional) fees.
Amazon pulls further ahead
eBay’s results continue to lag significantly behind Amazon’s in Europe’s two largest ecommerce markets, and the gap is only widening: last year, the market leader achieved growth rates of 12.7 percent and 8.7 percent in the United Kingdom and Germany respectively.
