Ecommerce giant Amazon is reportedly eyeing an expansion of its discount storefront, called Amazon Haul. It is supposed to compete with cheap ecommerce platforms like Temu and Shein. It is planning to launch Haul in Europe later this year.

The online marketplace has been growing steadily in Europe. In 2024, Amazon generated a revenue of 39.6 billion euros in Germany and 36.7 billion euros in the United Kingdom, for example. This was a growth of 8.7 percent and 12.7 percent, respectively.

At the same time, competitors like Temu and Shein are also increasing their market share in Europe. Because of that, Amazon is looking for ways to stay ahead.

Planned launch of Amazon Haul

In November, the ecommerce giant launched Amazon Haul, which is only accessible through the company’s mobile app. Most items cost 20 dollars or less, and the product range includes makeup, apparel and accessories.

Job openings indicate that Amazon Haul will launch in Europe later this year

According to sources, Amazon posted job openings for a software development engineer in the Haul team, to help with a worldwide launch. This indicates that the company is planning a launch in Europe.

Challenges

However, a launch could bring up some challenges. Amazon mostly uses plastic packaging for Haul shipments. But in Europe, it is no longer using single-use plastic bags on our continent. Amazon started using recyclable paper bags, cardboard envelopes and boxes. These materials are more expensive, which could reduce profit margins.
