In the third quarter of last year, the online turnover in Spain increased 12.6 percent year-on-year. It reached 24.6 billion euros. At least 65 percent of all online transactions that originated in Spain, went to cross-border online shops.

This is according to data that is now available on the Spanish CNMCData portal. This portal is from the national authority for markets and competition. Last year, the same portal announced that ecommerce in Spain amounted to more than 84 billion euros in 2023. This was an increase of 16 percent.

Ecommerce turnover reached 24.6 billion euros in Q3

Now, the market authority has released data about the third quarter of 2024. In that quarter alone, the online turnover in the country reached 24.6 billion euros. During that time period, 442 million transactions were recorded. This was a year-on-year increase of 14.9 percent. Travel agencies and tour operators generated 11.4 percent of that revenue. Another 5.6 percent came from sales in air transport, and another 5.3 percent was originated by online sales of clothing.

57.2% of ecommerce turnover was spent cross-border

Spanish consumers often shop online from shops across the border. In the third quarter of last year, 42.8 percent of revenue spent at domestic online stores. The remaining 57.2 percent was spent cross-border.

65% of transactions were from Spanish consumers to other countries, 35% came from foreign shoppers to Spain

When comparing the revenue that was spent from abroad to Spain and from Spain to cross-border stores, Spain receives a deficit of 10.7 billion euros. This means that Spanish consumers placed more cross-border orders than the amount of orders that came to Spain from consumers in other countries. In terms of transactions, 35 percent of purchases came to Spain and 65 percent of orders went to other countries.

Cross-border turnover reached 14.05 billion euros

The cross-border turnover in Spain reached 14.05 billion euros in the third quarter of last year. Compared to that same period a year earlier, this was an increase of 16.2 percent. A large majority (94.7 percent) of cross-border purchases originating in Spain were place at online stores that were located within the European Union.

At the same time, online export (purchases in Spain originating from other countries) reached 3.35 billion euros. This was an increase of 8 percent compared to the third quarter in 2023. More than half (59.5 percent) of these orders came from within the European Union.
