MediaMarkt saw its marketplace revenue double in the past fiscal year. In the new year, the electronics retailer will open its virtual doors in Belgium, Poland, and Turkey. An additional expansion into new product categories is expected to attract new buyers and sellers.

This is revealed in the annual report of Ceconomy, the owner of MediaMarkt and Saturn. The group’s revenue grew by 5.3 percent to 22.4 billion euros, of which nearly 24 percent was generated online. Profitability improved as well. “The shift in the business model is progressing, with growth areas delivering strong results”, the press release states.

Marketplace as a growth pillar

Marketplace sales are an important growth area for Ceconomy, which aims for an online share of 30 percent within two years. After various trial phases, its flagship MediaMarkt started facilitating external sales in the second half of 2021 in the German home market.

Austria and Spain quickly followed, and with the addition of the Netherlands and Italy earlier this year, the count is now five. Together, approximately sixteen hundred marketplace sellers have added around two million products to the offering.

Doubling GMV

In the past fiscal year (2023-2024), the gross merchandise value of the marketplace more than doubled compared to the previous year. Third-party sales reached 277 million euros. MediaMarkt is on track to meet its target of 750 million euros in external sales in the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

MediaMarkt is on track to meet its marketplace target.

Growth will be largely achieved through both geographical and range expansion. From Ceconomy’s annual report: “The growth of our marketplace is driven by the rollout of the platform to additional countries, the onboarding of additional sellers and products, targeted marketing, new categories, and further improved omnichannel integration.”

Expansion

MediaMarkt’s marketplace will go live in Belgium, Poland, and Turkey in the current fiscal year. The financing solutions introduced in Germany will also be available to shoppers in Austria, Spain, the Netherlands, and Italy, Ceconomy announces. Additionally, in its home market, MediaMarkt will offer insurance products on the marketplace.

Product categories

Ceconomy also announces further expansion of product categories, following the addition of items such as DIY products, barbecues, and board games. Sellers will soon be able to use the platform to sell lamps, sports equipment, and children’s products:
