Microsoft has released Patch Tuesday updates that address critical Windows Server 2019 issues caused by the August 2024 security updates. These problems, including boot issues, system freezes, and performance slowdowns, were first reported on August 21, after admins installed the KB5041578 update.

Admins experienced severe system slowdowns, high CPU usage, and unresponsiveness, particularly linked to Cryptographic Services during antivirus scans of the ‘%systemroot%system32catroot2’ folder. These issues predominantly affected enterprise environments, making them less likely to impact Home or Pro Windows users. Many admins linked the problem to the Antimalware Service Executable, a Windows Defender background process.

The issue has now been resolved with the release of the KB5043050 update on September 10, 2024, as confirmed by Microsoft’s update to the Windows release health page. Microsoft recommends all users install the latest security update to resolve this issue and implement other important improvements.

For those unable to deploy KB5043050, Microsoft provides a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) group policy as a workaround for Windows 10 1809 and Windows Server 2019. Admins can configure the rollback through the Group Policy Editor by targeting specific Windows versions. Afterward, a restart will apply the settings.

For further guidance on configuring KIR Group Policies, admins can refer to Microsoft’s support website.

Installing the latest updates is crucial to ensure system performance and prevent further disruptions.
