Zalando has taken new steps in Southern Europe. The German company has launched a dedicated website for Portugal. Additionally, Zalando has started selling beauty products in Spain, which have not yet been part of the offering in the neighboring country.

Online consumer spending in Portugal last year was around 4.1 billion euros, but it is expected to grow to over 6.6 billion euros by 2029. With an offering of 200,000 items in clothing, shoes, accessories, and sports goods, Zalando is now entering the market.

“We are particularly proud to introduce our innovative tech, including the Zalando AI assistant and Trend Spotter, designed to make fashion discovery more personalised, inspiring, and fun”, writes Eloisa Siclari, General Manager Southern Europe, on LinkedIn. “This launch also unlocks new growth opportunities for local fashion businesses. A connected Europe, indeed! Welcome to the Zalando universe, Portugal!”

Zalando now active in 26 countries

The opening of Zalando.pt marks the company’s first international expansion since 2022, when it entered Hungary and Romania. The year before, Zalando launched in Lithuania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. The company is now present in 26 countries, with plans for 28 by the end of the year: launches for Greece and Bulgaria are still to come. Zalando.gr and Zalando.bg are not yet live.

Upcoming launches in Greece and Bulgaria

Zalando is riding a wave of success, with consecutive quarters of revenue and profit growth. Over the past year, Zalando gained over 3 million new customers, and with the new online store launches, the number of customers is expected to continue growing. Furthermore, the acquisition of About You is expected to transform Zalando into a B2B powerhouse.

Beauty in Spain

While Zalando is new to Portugal, the company has been active in Spain since 2012 with a dedicated website. Following several other markets, the company has now started selling beauty products in Spain, ranging from skincare items to perfumes. “We are convinced that beauty will make the Zalando experience even more complete, inspiring, and relevant for our customers”, says Siclari about this expansion in Spain, where online consumer spending is also on the rise.
